Book Review

For people that love rats, we find we just cannot get enough of them. So for people who like to read about them, here are my reviews on the rat related books I have read.

First and favourite:

"Seal Morning" by Rowena Farre.

It is a true story of the authors life in a crofters cottage in the Hebrides and the life she shares with animals, including a very smart rat called Rodney.

"Time stops for no mouse. " by Michael Hoeye.

Fictional children's story about a mouse detective.

" That Pesky Rat" by Lauren Child.

Lovely children's story with great pictures about a rat that just wants to be loved.

"Willard" by Stephen Gilbert.

Very strange story about a man and how he trained rats to get revenge on his tormentors. I did not enjoy this story but was intrigued by the resourcefulness of the rats.

"The house of Tribes." by Gary Kilworth.

Mainly about Mice, however it featured a rat called Kellog, who did not deserve his untimely end. Mostly enjoyable

"The amazing Maurice and his educated rodents" by Terry Pratchet

Delightful story, very exciting and well written.

"The Journal of Watkins Stench" by Meredith Hooper.

This is a tale of the first fleet to Australia as told by the rat colony aboard. I loved this one.

"The Tale of Tom Kitten" by Beatrix Potter.

This is where Samuel Whiskers and his wife Anna Maria tried to make Tom Kitten into a roly poly pudding. I buy this story for all my young relatives.

 "Rats" by Lian Tanner.

A really good  modern children's story written by a Tasmanian writer who although does not have pet rats has captured the spirit of our pets with all the quirks and foibles of the pet rat and their devoted owners.

"The Rambles of a Rat".

suggested by Rose. It is a very old book, written by Charlotte Marie Tucker about a rat hero.

"The Reluctant Spy" by Lois June Wickstrom.

A wonderful modern children's story full of intrigue and twists to the plot. I loved the way the rat Hildegarde was used in the story.

A good buy for children that like spy thrillers that are not too graphic but full of adventure, and for rat lovers like me that like reading stories that contain rats as central characters.

"The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of Riley" by Colin Thompson& Amy Lissiat.

A wonderful thought provoking story. It was The Children's Book Council of Australia picture book of the year 2006.

Here is the summary:

Human beings live for quite a long time and for a lot of that time we are not happy. We want to be taller, shorter, fatter, thinner, older and younger
We want our straight hair to be curly and our curly hair to be straight and our brown eyes to be blue.
We hate our parents, children, teachers students and everybody. We want to be somewhere else with someone else eating something else and wearing something fantastic no one else can afford, and we want to splash them as we drive by in our big red car.
Rats live for a short time and for most of that time they are very very happy....
